1.
Using serrated knife, cut the foam pieces as follows (hint:
for smoother cuts, wax knife blade with an old candle):
a. Head - Cut away 1/3 of ball lengthwise, and then 1/3 from
top of ball (refer to Diagram 1).
b. Hands and Feet - Cut eggs in half lengthwise; use large half-eggs
for feet and small half-eggs for hands.
c. Upper arms - Cut two 1 1/2" x 1" lengths
d. Gown - Cut 11" x 17" x 1" piece. Following
Diagram 2, place Pattern A (Upper Gown) on foam sheet. Using
felt tip marker, trace around pattern, but don't draw bottom
line. Draw lines A and B, from underarms of upper gown to each
corner of foam sheet. Cut out.
e. Sleeves - Cut out from 1" sheet, using Pattern B.
f. Mortarboard - Cut out from 1/2" sheet, using Pattern
C. |
2.
Paint:
a. Gown, sleeves, upper arms, mortarboard - blue (or your school
colors)
b. Face and hands - flesh
c. Shoes - black |
| 3.
Cut two, 2 1/4" lengths of wooden dowel for legs; paint
with flesh paint. Stain remaining dowel brown. |
| 4.
With large, flat side of head to the back, glue on two buttons
for eyes; paint on cheeks and mouth. |
| 5.
Break a toothpick in half; insert two halves halfway into top
of head. Using glue gun, glue mortarboard to head, pushing onto
toothpicks. Glue button to top, right-hand corner of mortarboard;
add tassel. |
| 6.
Cut pennant from cardboard and add appropriate message; glue
end around stained dowel. |
| 7.
To make diploma, roll up velum sheet; glue and tie with ribbon. |
| 8.
Cut six 3" lengths of jute; tie a knot with 1/4" tails
at end of each length. The knotted pieces of jute serve as connectors
between the arm pieces; to join the pieces, use the tip of the
glue gun to insert and glue knot into foam. Attach upper arms
to gown at shoulder, sleeves to upper arms and hands to sleeves.
Glue diploma to gown and glue left hand over diploma. Glue pennant
dowel to gown and glue right hand over dowel. Using toothpicks
between pieces, glue head to neck. Using sharp pencil, make
holes in tops of shoes and bottom edge of gown; insert leg dowel
in holes, connecting shoes and gown. |
| 9.
For hanger, tie a loop in 9" length of jute. Using awl,
make an angled hole, pointing up, in back of gown. Glue knot
and tails into hole. |
